Apply your software engineering skills at a busy Seattle-area subsidiary of German-based developer and manufacturer of System-on-Module (SoM) industrial computers for embedded systems. In this position you will develop and adapt drivers and system-level OS components of Windows Embedded (CE and XPE) Board Support Packages (BSPs) for ARM9, ARM11, ARM Cortex A8/A9, and x86 embedded processor platforms. You will provide advice and consultation to PHYTEC sales engineers for customer applications requiring Windows Embedded and, likewise, consult with product managers during the planning, design and analysis phases for new and existing PHYTEC solutions. In addition to close collaboration with PHYTEC hardware engineers and product managers, this position interacts with PHYTEC customers as well as third-party solution vendors.

Primary Duties:

  • Collaborate with embedded hardware developers and project managers on defining new PHYTEC product solutions
  • Partake in all aspects of the software solutions lifecycle: project proposals, design requirements and specifications, adherence to development milestones, quality assurance, release management, and support
  • Port existing Windows Embedded CE OS, reference board and drivers to PHYTEC System on Modules and custom hardware
  • Port and develop low level software for new platforms, including processor boot up code, kernel code and drivers (such as: NAND-Flash, NOR-Flash, DDR-RAM, Ethernet, USB, Bluetooth, CAN, I2S, SPI, GPS, Touchscreen, Video, SPI, I2C, PCI)
  • Provide customer driven BSP adaptations
  • Debug difficult architecture and device problems
  • Work with hardware developers on production test fixture design to provide high-quality finished goods

Other Duties:

  • Provide second-level customer support for PHYTEC Windows Embedded BSPs
  • Assist with readying new BSPs and Rapid Development Kits (RDK) for market, as well as in maintaining existing products
  • Liaison with development engineers and product managers to create, review, and maintain product documentation, to include: Application Notes, QuickStart Instructions, Hardware Manuals, and BSP Release Notes
  • Engage in special projects, such as SVN/GIT/ftp server maintenance, editing of foundation .dlls for test master database, and other duties, as necessary

Required Skills:

  • 3 to 5 years work experience in embedded software design, including Windows Embedded CE, C/C++ programming; Visual Studio, Platform Builder and other software development tools; and low-level device driver development
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Multiple hardware platform experience, in particular ARM, x86 and XScale
  • Skilled at debugging, board bring-up as well as test equipment, tools and methodologies
  • Abilities to solve problems which are difficult and complex in nature; as well as to critically analyze and resolve software problems that have open limits, are diverse in scope, and often contain multi-disciplinary elements
  • Excellent client service, verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility, attention to detail and talents at multi-tasking in a high energy work environment
  • Abilities to work both independently and in small team environment, and to quickly learn new software tools and programming skills for a variety of hardware platforms

Responsible for designing, developing, and sustaining optical and opto-electromechanical systems for diagnostic medical microbiology and molecular instrumentation. DUTIES AND Responsibilities:


· Develop design specifications for optical systems in instrumented products.

· Lead or be solely responsibile for detail design of optical subsystems.

· Apply engineering principles, analytical skills and empirical methods to develop statistically robust designs.

· Design products to meet cost targets. Prepare cost estimates of components and assembly labor.

· Accurately estimate work effort for specific engineering tasks for schedule allocation of optical engineering resources.

· Lead, contribute to and participate in design reviews. Thoroughly assess the ability of proposed designs to meet specified requirements, including manufacturability.

· Assist in test planning and development to insure instrument systems and sub-systems are reliable and robust.

· Complete assignments within established schedules and budgets.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:

Optical design experience on fluorescence and absorbance based detection systems. Hands-on experience effectively resolving design, manufacturing and vendor issues associated with tightly specified parts, component variability and obsolescence. Optics knowledge and experience required in the following areas:

¨ LED's: thermal and optical properties, construction, characterization methods

¨ Optical filters: characteristics, coatings, specifications, test & evaluation methods

¨ Detectors: photodiodes, CMOS image sensors and photomultipliers

¨ Spectral analysis, imaging optics, and alignment methods

¨ Fiber optics: construction, specification, evaluation & test methods

¨ Sequential and non-sequential ray tracing software

The Manufacturing Engineer (ME) role is a key contributor within the Instruments Manufacturing Department at BD Biosciences. It provides hands-on support for the manufacturing of confocal imaging systems while providing technical leadership in a collaborative team environment. The BD Pathway systems enable fluorescence intensity measurements, kinetic imaging, and morphological analysis of single cells. The ME is expected to contribute new ideas and to find innovative methods to accomplish business goals as well as to demonstrate good working knowledge of manufacturing processes and theories of continuous improvement (CI). Problem resolution skills at moderate to high-complexity levels should be well established in optical-mechanical designs. Attention to detail and patience are essential in this job due to the complexity of our test procedures.

* Resolves day-to-day production issues that may impede BD's ability to ship quality products on time. Must be an adept and experienced problem solver who is able to determine root cause of technical issues and implements effective solutions in a timely manner. Issues are typically multi-disciplinary in nature: mechanical, optical, and electrical. Strives to continuously improve processes in order to achieve optimal efficiency for manufacturing operations.
* May be required to lead or to participate in cross-functional project teams. Major objectives may include: improving manufacturing operational efficiency, optimizing product design, qualifying replacement components, improving product quality, improving customer satisfaction, and reducing manufacturing costs.
* Responsible for preparing and revising Engineering Change Orders, routings, and Bills of Material.
* Review and disposition Nonconformance Reports, Field Failures, prepare Deviation Reports and complete Corrective Action Reports as required to support the overall Quality System.
* Support and execute Lean manufacturing efforts, ie Kaizen actions, 20 Keys, and 5S methodologies.

* Works independently with general instructions as to the objectives expected. Provides technical guidance to the production and service team on unusual or complex problems related to the product line.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

* Typically requires a BS degree: ME, IE, Physics, or equivalents.
* 6+ year experience in a high technology manufacturing environment.
* Experienced with optical system alignment. Attention to detail is essential along with hands-on experience in fine mechanical adjustments.
* Experienced in developing manufacturing processes, writing procedures, and training assembly and test personnel.
* Must be able to understand engineering drawings, Bills of Materials, and operational procedures.
* Must have the ability to write, review and implement Engineering Change Orders.
* Must have some project management experience, involved in or led continuous improvement efforts in a cross-functional team environment (2 years minimum).
* Familiarity with LEAN manufacturing processes.
* Ability to work effective with minimal direction. Recognizes problems and develops and executes strategies with team input.
